NYFW Recap: Mason Sylvester Spring/Summer 2015

I’ve been blogging about indie designer Mason Sylvester for years (see my thoughts here, herehere and here). Even though he’s strictly a menswear designer (. . . and every season I hope he’ll change his mind and add womenswear to his lineup), you simply can’t deny great craftsmanship, an impeccable taste level and the attention to detail.

The first Mason Sylvester presentation I attended in 2010 featured accessories such as silk bowties and women’s scarves embellished with Swarovski (yes, Swarovski!) crystals. In 2011, I sat front row as he showed for the first time at New York Fashion Week debuting his spring/summer 2012 collection to rave reviews. By early-2012 he’d really stepped up his design aesthetic, presenting a grown-up fall/winter collection that mixed texture and prints (think: brocade, faux fur, denim and velvet). For spring/summer 2013, the look was “strongly soft” blending a muted color palette with rich, bold texture.

So it comes as no surprise that his spring/summer 2015 Urban Resort collection, which debuted during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week last Friday, was nothing short of amazing. Sylvester says that his “. . . goal was to create resort-inspired pieces with the practicality of an urban lifestyle.” Inspired by city skyline silhouettes, he once again mixed prints and textures “to emulate the excitement of city living while emcompassing the effortless ease and taste of the vacation and resort experience.” What you get is a carefully thought out line of sophisticated menswear separates that can be mixed-and-matched a variety of ways — and even the boys need to have options!
