When I was a kid, adults would often gush about beautiful my hair was. A back-handed compliment inevitably followed, some version of “your hair will look great, once you know what to do with it.”
As eye roll-inducing as those comments were, there may have been a nugget of truth there — I’ve tested more hair products than I can count in an effort to keep my sometimes curly, sometimes wavy mane under control. I’ve basically got it down to a science at this point: wash, condition, then apply a serum, followed by a leave-in conditioner and (if I’m flat ironing my hair) a post-heat spray that helps tame frizz. I have developed some favorites over the years, but I’m always looking for new things to try, especially products that don’t contain harmful chemicals.
Enter Alterna Caviar Anti-Aging Replenishing Moisture Milk, which I recently swapped in for my leave-in. It’s paraben and sulfate free, which are must-haves for my color-treated hair. Milk is an adequate description of this stuff — despite what I expected from the bottle’s spray top, it’s a thick formula. As a result, I was worried it would weigh down my hair or, worse, cause build-up, but I carried on in the name of beauty.
After applying the moisture milk, I took extra care blow drying my hair and then used my flat iron as a last step. I emerged with what I enthusiastically told my friends was “a really, really good hair day” — my hair had just enough volume and best of all, it didn’t feel dry. Even after a couple humid days, my DIY blowout held strong.
Given how thick my hair is, I do wonder if those with finer textures would see the same results — for what it’s worth, the company recommends using it in place of regular conditioner for finer hair. I’m excited to try more from Alterna and plan to keep the moisture milk in my beauty arsenal.
