December Beauty Reads

Here are some of the best tips, tricks and trends I took from my (insane) monthly beauty reading list:

Glamour

Cover Girl: Claire Danes (from their January 2014 issue)

Spotlight On: Beauty-related resolutions — think vows to step up sun protection, experiment with color and apply hand cream to stave off dryness. In other words.

Pro Tip: Dermatologist Jessica Wu, M.D. recommends taking a bath with skin-nourishing oil at least once a week to combat itchy, dry skin. Her decidedly winter-y pick is Jo Malone London’s Bath Oil in Nutmeg and Ginger.

Etc. The magazine presents 31 ways to wear your hair in January — pretty braids and messy waves abound.

Lucky

Cover Girl: Kerry Washington (from their December 2013/January 2014 issue)

Spotlight On: Lucky’s December cover is pretty infamous — fans of the “Scandal” beauty were shocked at how un-Kerry Washington (and dare we say, outdated) its star looked. If you can get past that, the magazine has great tips on getting primped for the season and how to maintain a healthy glow (yes, even in winter).

Pro Tip: Look to plant-based moisturizers to keep your skin smoother and fresh during the cold months. Recommendations range from Avon to Chanel.

Etc. Scarlett Johansson shares some of her favorite beauty staples — from the budget-friendly Lucas’ Papaw Ointment to this luxe red lipstick from (who else?) Dolce & Gabbana.

Elle

Cover Girl: Lea Michele (from their December 2013 issue)

Spotlight On: Subdued party makeup (read: hold the glitter) and a roundup of products to help you achieve the look.

Pro Tip: This issue has a really interesting meditation on applying makeup with your fingers, complete with a guide to the most finger-friendly products. It works and let’s be real: those brushes can get expensive.

Etc. Read Lea’s interview, which touches on her forthcoming album and life after the death of her boyfriend, Cory Monteith. There’s also a super luxe gift guide.

Stay beautiful,

Bethonie, S&P Beauty Contributor
