Kitiya Mischo King’s blog Mischo Beauty has been one of my favorites for years. It offers an insider’s take (she is a chemist, licensed cosmetologist, manicurist, esthetician and makeup artist) on all things beautimous — from anti-aging moisturizers to deep cleansing masks. In other words, this woman knows her stuff.

When she announced earlier this year that she was launching a line of toxin-free nail polishes dubbed Mischo Beauty Luxury Nail Lacquers, I knew I had to get my hands on a bottle once it became available. And if you follow Kitiya on Instagram — where she shared swatches of her fall 2013 collection long before it officially launched — then you know why I had to have it. The line has gotten lots of industry buzz with features in W Magazine, Refinery 29, The Zoe Report and Daily Candy.

Since she’s a fellow D.C.-area based blogger and woman entrepreneur making innovative moves, I had to feature Kitiya in our Real Style series. Here, she dishes on what inspired the colors in her debut polish line, her fall/winter wardrobe staples and her beauty must-haves:

How did the fashion industry influence your new collection of luxury nail lacquers?

The fashion industry, particularly Fashion Week, goes hand-in-hand with beauty. I love Fashion Week and I was so inspired by the colors on the runway for fall 2013. The names of the lacquers in the launch collection also pay homage to Fashion Week with names like “Backstage Beauty” celebrating the people who work tirelessly backstage to make the shows happen and “#NYFW” to show how social fashion week has become.

Since fashion and beauty go hand-in-hand, how can everyday fashionistas put their best face forward without their makeup overpowering their entire look?

I’m a huge fan of a bold lip — especially red! Nail polish always makes a statement, and you can change it as often as you want. Nail art makes a great statement without overpowering your look.

Who’s your favorite celebrity style star?

I *HEART* 1960s/70s Diana Ross! I love her style from that era — the hair, the makeup, the lashes, and of course her wardrobe. I fell in love with her after seeing her in the role as Billie Holiday in “Lady Sings the Blues.” I never knew she won a Golden Globe and received an Oscar nomination for that role — now I realize why. And who could ever forget her iconic style in “Mahogany.” It all inspired me to do some research on her during that time period and that’s how she became my favorite style icon.

What are your go-to fall/winter wardrobe staples?

My absolute favorite wardrobe staple right now is my Givenchy Nightingale bag. I have the large black bag with the gold-tone hardware and I never leave home without it! I’m not one to switch bags very often. I prefer to invest in a bag I’m absolutely in love with and that’s what I did with this one, which I’ve been carrying since 2009.

Givenchy Nightingale Satchel,

What are three go-to beauty products you can’t live without?

Maybelline Volum’ Express ‘The Falsies’ Mascara: The mascara separates, lengthens and gives my lashes amazing volume — and it’s budget-friendly.

Mischo Luxury Nail Lacquer in the Tents: The formula is 5-free, toxin-free and cruelty-free, which are all musts for me. I love that this shade is buildable — I can wear it as sheer or opaque as I want. It’s the perfect nude that works with every skin tone.

Clarisonic Brush: It’s hands down my favorite beauty tool. I use it with my favorite cleanser, but also with an exfoliant for an even deeper cleansing. I love that it works to ensure a deep, thorough and gentle cleansing.

What’s next for Mischo Beauty?

The spring 2014 collection of the Mischo Luxury Nail Lacquers will launch February 1, 2014. Our line of color cosmetics, which will include lipstick, lip gloss and blush, launches fall 2014. I’m excited for what’s to come and can’t wait to share it with everyone!
