4 Fall Beauty Trends You Should Try

Fall is my favorite season. The leaves, the crisp cool air. The Pumpkin Spice Latte. It’s also a great beauty season as summer’s bright hues take a smoldering turn.

Here are a few of my favorite fall trends:

Plum Pouts

Take your beauty up a notch with a wine-toned lip, one of fall’s standout trends. You can achieve the look (for less than $10) with Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain in Crush. If you’re splurging, look to this super luxe Bruised Plum shade from Tom Ford.

Plum shades are especially versatile — you can apply them lightly for a berry accent or layer them on for a bolder (read: sexier) look. My go-to is Nars’ Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Damned.

I apply it lightly and add gloss to achieve a more work-appropriate look. If I’m going out, I’ll skip the gloss and give my lips the full plum treatment.

Dramatic Eyes

Whether you opt for a deep emerald hue or more neutral tones, lips aren’t the only feature to show off this season. How refreshing is this rusty smoky eye? (h/t Refinery 29). This robust Sonia Kashuk palette will help you channel both classic and edgy looks.

And don’t think you have to reach for eyeshadow — the fall 2013 runways proved that a little lot of eyeliner (particularly the winged variety) can make a statement just as well. Part of the appeal is that it doesn’t have to be perfect. If you’re a liner novice, this ergonomic (and foolproof) design from Nyx is your new best friend.

Fresh Faces

For all of fall’s bold trends, this one marks a nod to the natural. Pair look-at-me lips or eyes with a glowing complexion, courtesy of your favorite tinted moisturizer or foundation. I use Laura Mercier’s lauded tinted moisturizer. If you’re looking for a more matte finish, try Nars Radiant Cream Foundation.

Pair this look with a bold lip or go for the “no makeup makeup” look seen at Ralph Lauren.

Matte Manicures

This is one of my favorite trends because anyone can pull this off. Classic colors (think: black, navy or red) get a chic update with matte textures. Try a shade that dries matte or a topcoat like Essie’s “Matte About You.” Feeling more adventurous? Follow this DIY tutorialΒ from makeup maven Michelle Phan.
