I want candy! Well, that wasn’t the theme at the Birchbox + Madewell: Shop into Spring event last Wednesday in the Nation’s Capital, but it could have been. That is if candy = pops of color, chambray accents and sleek totes. Sounds sweet to me.
If you aren’t familiar with Madewell, think of it as J. Crew‘s hip little sister — just as put together, but with an edge. Last week, the store teamed up with Birchbox, the company that sends carefully-curated make-up and skincare samples to its subscribers each month. That partnership gave way to in-store events centered around spring beauty.
The night of the event, the Georgetown Madewell store was sprinkled with Birchbox’s signature pink and tan boxes. Upstairs, stylists from Kerastase created loose, romantic braids for attendees. In an adjacent room, a D.J. spun energetic tunes. In addition to mini cupcakes and fruit-infused champagne, event-goers were treated to $25 off a purchase of $75 or more. I don’t exactly look to Madewell for budget buys, so that’s a welcome discount.
The braids seemed to be the only beauty element at the event — as a personal Birchbox subscriber, I would have loved to see some of Birchbox + Madewell Spring Beauty Picks. But Madewell’s chic style does lend itself to a no-fuss look — think some BB cream, a swipe of mascara and a dab of your favorite lipstick (bonus, if you go for a bright color). I’ve yet to find the right BB cream, so I mix SPF (I love Josie Maran’s Argan Daily Moisturizer) with my go-to tinted moisturizer (I’m a fan of this Laura Mercier tube) when I’m going for a low-key look.
As for the fashion, I saw lots of colored denim, tons of the aforementioned chambray, muted cardis and several shades of the lovely-yet-functional transport tote I’ve been coveting for months. If you’re looking to upgrade your spring fashion palette, I’d definitely recommend including Madewell on your shopping map.
