When it comes to contemporary style, Rachel Roy is one of the few designers who gets that 20- to 30-something women want to look polished and chic without having to dress like their mothers.
Roy visited the Washington area this weekend to debut her spring 2010 collection for Macy’s at Tysons Galleria. It was a laidback affair, complete with a DJ spinning the best of the ’80s from Michael Jackson to The Bangles, servers dishing out small bites like mini-hamburgers and popcorn, while guests combed through racks of RACHEL Rachel Roy fashions marked down to 20% off.
She met with eventgoers offering words of wisdom to burgeoning fashionistas hoping to someday make it big. And S&P got a chance to talk style with the gorgeous designer: When it comes to looking your best — day or night — you don’t have to spend a fortune, Roy said. Try mixing high-end pieces with low-end items from stores like Zara or H&M, she recommended.
Through her partnership with the major department store, the designer makes clothes that are trendy without being too over-the-top and work well with staple pieces you may already own. And with price points that start at $13.99, you can score runway looks for a fraction of the cost.
