The ’00s: A Decade in Style

5 Jan

Now that we’ve said goodbye to the 2000s, it’s time to reflect on the decade that was in style. From plunging necklines to towering stilettos to bad girl edge, fashion pushed the boundaries unlike ever before.

Check out some of our top picks for style stars (and moments) of the decade:

How Low Can You Go

All eyes were on dancer turned actress turned singer Jennifer Lopez as she walked the red carpet at the 42nd Annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles in 2000. Her choice of a low plunging, flowy silk chiffon, floor-length Versace dress was the topic of conversation for fans, fashion editors and critics days later.

Making History (in Style)

Actress Halle Berry looked simply stunning while accepting the Academy Award for Best Actress for her roll in the film “Monster’s Ball” in 2002. Dressed in a burgundy, netted gown with train by Elie Saab, she fabulously sobbed her way into cinema history after being named the first black actress to win the honor.

Funky, Fresh, Dressed to Impress

R&B singer Kelis has always had an eclectic sense of style. She’s one of very few female celebrities who can do practically anything to her look — from tied-dyed tresses to a mod mullet) and it comes out looking hot.

When she released her third album “Tasty” in 2003, Kelis turned a lot of heads. Going from funky, R&B alternative chick to a glammed up songstress professing how her milkshake was better than yours. Rocking skinny jeans, a shaved head and harem pants long before the rest of us caught on, she oozed sex appeal minus the trashiness.

She’s Your Dreamgirl

Since going solo in 2003, pop star Beyonce Knowles‘s style has gone from girl next door to diva status. From cute and trendy to all flash and no filter, she had ‘tweens and grown women everywhere wanting to dress like her.

In 2007, the singer showed up at the 64th Golden Globe Awards looking extra vamp in a body-hugging, bedazzled Elie Saab gown. She was Sasha Fierce personified.

Rated ‘F’ for Fabulous

Without a doubt, pop singer Rihanna‘s “good girl gone bad” makeover has helped make her one of the most copied stars of the decade in just two years. The decision to chop off her long, honey blonde locks to go short and dark (back in late-’07, early-’08) was styling genius. The singer transformed from an island beauty into a sexy rocker chick, and we all seemed to like it — a lot.

Michelle Obama

Before she became the First Lady of the United States of America, Michelle Obama was already on everyone’s fashion radar. Beckoning Jackie-O with her signature sheath dresses, cardigans and single strand pearl necklaces, Obama has revived classic, contemporary American women’s style.

She’s made household names out of virtual fashion unknowns, such as Jason Wu and Maria Pinto. And even seasoned designers clamor for the chance to get her in one of their pieces.

It was “us vs. them” among those who loved or hated her look for the inaugural balls in January ’09. Dressed in an off-white, one-shouldered Jason Wu gown with rosette details, she had fashion critics talking:

“. . . Michelle Obama is rewriting the fashion rules and she looks every inch the style icon she is becoming. The one-shouldered style is sexy and the powdery hue reflects the trends we saw on the Golden Globes red carpet. And won’t it look nice in the Smithsonian alongside the other first lady gowns?” (Source)
