Everyday Stylin’
First impressions mean everything. And when you work in fashion — an industry based on looks — this can make or break you. So how does an up-and-comer in the business create standout style in a field of copycats?
Say hello to Garmai, a 25-year-old stylist from Atlanta, Ga. With an insider’s eye, she describes her fashion loves, favorite places to shop and her style inspiration.

Fashion is everything -- it's love, it's art, it's fantasy, it's life, it's passion.
Describe your style in five words or less.
Feminine, classic, sexy and personal.
What influences your personal style?
I am a HUGE magazine person and am always challenging myself to wear things that I love, but am afraid to try. The biggest influence on my personal style is the fashion industry itself. It’s so creative and beautiful and constantly evolving — it’s far more than keeping up with trends. This is the industry that I love and work in. I want people to be able to see that by how I dress, but also still see me.
What does being a “recessionista fashionista” mean to you?
It means being smarter and less impulsive with purchases. The economic times have caused everyone, regardless of income, to be wiser with how they spend their money. It’s also a great time to mix high and low priced items together. It’s helping to breed more creativity.
Which stores do you shop at most often?
My favorite store is Target. I love what they do with the designer collections, but the brand has great quality pieces that you can incorporate into an everyday wardrobe. I get a lot of compliments from things I buy from there, and people are always shocked when I tell them where it’s from. I’m also a fan of H&M, Gap and Forever 21.
Online shopper or mall rat?
I’ve turned into a serious online shopper. I have never been one to try on clothes [in the store], so it works for me. I especially love shopping for shoes and accessories online. There is a better variety and you can find things a lot of people in your city won’t have on.
What’s your favorite fall fashion trend?
I’m loving the statement necklace trend, because it gives a dressed down or a dressed up look a lot of personality. Also, I can’t wait to get in on the knee-high boot trend.
Choose one: over-the-knee boots, booties, flats, platform pumps or stilettos?
I’m going to go with a nice stiletto pump, because it’s classic, sexy and looks good with most any outfit.
If you could splurge on one luxury clothing item or accessory, what would it be?
I would REALLY love an Hermes bag. That’s a true splurge, but it is an investment. I remember hearing Martha Stewart say she bought hers in the ’70s for a few $1,000, and now they’re worth about $10,000. That’s some smart shopping!
Finish this statement: “Fashion is…”
Fashion is everything — it’s love, it’s art, it’s fantasy, it’s life, it’s passion.
